Is there such thing as a real friend?

As I grow older I always seem to ask this question. A few years ago I had all the friends you could ask for but then I realized to true meaning of "you can only trust yourself" you wouldn't think it but living in a small town made this even easier to realize because everyone knows everybody's story- where their from, what they drive, where they live now & used to in the past. It gets under my skin how when someone is looking at you they base the way they feel about you on what they have heard about you. Its always going to come back to no matter how close you are to someone they are going to say something behind your back, lie to you about something or just straight out be so fake to you. Its just a fact of reality :)
